Paul Tietjens appointed Head Coach for RW7s

Updated: Oct 27, 2022

We're delighted to announce the appointmnet of Paul Tietjens as head coach for the Lions and Lionesses ahead of the 2022 Rugby World 7s set to take place in Grenada later this year.

Paul is currently head coach of Nagato Blue Angels, a professional sevens side competing in the Japanese 7s circuit. He has previously worked with the NSW Waratahs, Bay of Plenty & New Zealand Development as their lead sevens coach and spent 3 years heading up the Papua New Guinea women's programme. He also spent a season as a skills/strength & conditioning coach with the Samoa 7s.

As a player, Paul has played for Bay Of Plenty & Manuwatu 7s sides, in addition to featuring for the USA 7s in 2011.

Speaking about his appointment, Paul had this to say, "Born and raised in the Bay of Plenty NZ, rugby 7’s and coaching in particular has been a massive part of my life since I was very young.

Since taking up coaching at the age of 24, the last 10 years have been massive for my growth, development and experience as a head coach.

Over this time, I have been fortunate enough to lead club, representative and national programs, and have had the chance to work with some great players and management along the way.

Providing athletes with a platform to express themselves, develop their skill sets, and become a better person, is something that is extremely important to me.

I look forward to leading the Lion and Lionesse rugby 7’s programmes in the Caribbean later this year, and am extremely grateful for the opportunity."

DoR for the Lions and Lionesses Mark Francis said "We’re honoured that Paul Tietjens will be leading the Lions and Lionesse coaching team in Grenada. He is a pro Head Coach in Japan and is still young enough and good enough himself to play on the World Series."
