Lions Roar in Glendale, Colorado USA

The Lions returned from a successful week away competing at RugbyTown 7s tournament held in Glendale, Colorado USA, claiming victory in the RugbyTown 7s Bowl championship.

The bowl is the second tier competition sitting below and running parallel to the Tier 1 competition.

The Lion 7s, possibly the youngest side at the event with an average of 20 yrs across the squad, and the only GB side (out of 20 other participating teams), to compete, won the hearts of the crowds with some show-stopping performances including 2 overtime wins vs DC Santa Rosa where Lion 7s fought back a 14 point deficit with 5 players on the pitch, and hometown favourites Denver 7s Selects.

After finishing 3rd in the pool which included 3 previous tournament winners, Day 2 saw us advance to face the US Marines in the quarter- final in a Saturday night spectacle. A convincing 49-0 win result ensured a place in the semi-finals against Texas-based Gorilla rugby. After taking a 14-0 lead, the Lions managed to hold out against their jungle rivals to see out a 19-14 win. Now through to the final, we faced the 2021 runners-up So Cal Griffins , a squad full of MLR talent – which to many meant the Lion 7s were on the back foot and not the favourites to win.

So Cal took an early lead, 7-0 within a minute, but this did nothing to dampen the Lion 7s spirit, and they returned with 30 unanswered points against the Griffins - thus becoming the 2022 RugbyTown 7s Bowl Champions with a convincing 30-7 win.

Founder and team captain Arun Watkins said, "I’d just like to give a massive thank you to the amazing people of Glendale for putting on such a fantastic event and delivering one of the best 7s tournaments I’ve ever played in. We cannot wait to attend again next year"

We would like to thank our sponsors for their support:
